I’ve been waiting to the end of the year to give out the Anthony Rodriguez scholarship. Finally, the end of the school year arrived, and we gave out a 5,000 frank scholarship, and rice, to the best 20 students at the Bangou ville lycee (high school).

Bangou ville, which used to be the commercial center of Bangou is situated about 15 kilometers from Bangou Carrefour, where I live, about a 500 frank (a little over a dollar) taxi ride away. Ever since they paved the road between Bangante and Bafang, which crosses Bangou Carrefour, most of the commerce and people have moved south towards it. There is a saying in Cameroon that says, ‘Where the road goes, development follows’, and I’ve found it to be true.

So I went to Bangou ville and met with the principal to ask him if there was a time when we could do the presentation of the scholarship. He said the next day was the last day of school. I was hoping to have at least a few days to prepare something, but there was no time. I told him I would come back up the next day and we would do the presentation at noon.

I got back to Bangou Carrefour and started working on the diplomas to hand out and a short speech. I asked Aladji, my cultural counterpart to come with me as I figure he will be representing AADB when my time here is finished.

The next day, we gave out the diplomas which the kids could show to their parents and they will most likely hang on the wall, and they can use as proof of the scholarship for next year. The next year they can come back and show their diplomas and get the 5,000 computer lab fee waived. Also, all the honor roll students as well as all Anthony Rodriguez scholarship recipients received a kilo of rice courtesy of AADB. According to the principal, the rice is part of tradition, plus they can eat it with their families later.

Overall we spent about 130,000 franks, which was money well spent on a program that will hopefully continue indefinitely.
